My introduction to helping people and psychology both came about, as a result of following my mom’s example and the Bob Newhart Show. My mother was a natural people person with a keen interest and background in psychology. My take-away from the Bob Newhart Show drove home the needs for humor and light-heartedness as well as a genuine love for what you do. I believe that those qualities: love for people and my passion and seeing the humor in things truly define me, both as a therapist and a person. My academic journey led me to both bachelors and masters degrees from The University of Northern Colorado and included intensive training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy during my sabbatical in between my degrees. With a strong theoretical base supporting me, I moved forward and was able to blend my education with twenty years of real-world experience. I went on and diversified my experience as I worked in community counseling, community corrections, Inpatient psychiatric hospitals, and private practice. Although our learning never ceases, I feel very comfortable and sincere in offering clients my wealth of experience, knowledge of human behavior, and most of all, a kind ear.

I am excited to work with folks 12+ who don't want therapy to feel like a doctor's office. I have experience working with anxiety, low self-esteem, disconnection, and trauma, as well as folks navigating difficult diagnoses and changing life circumstances that leave them feeling stuck, afraid, or alone.
"What matters more than what you know is how much you care" is a phrase I took with me from one of my professors in Grad School. I believe that statement embodies who I am and what I bring to the practice - lots of care! With that said, I have been in practice either working in both alternative and traditional high schools, as a school-based therapist in a facility school for students with special needs, and/or in the private setting since 2016. I have worked with a wide range of ages and populations, not just kids/teens but adults too! My experience includes helping those struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, divorce/parenting/blended families, grief/loss, sexual abuse and other traumas, autism, intellectual disabilities with co-occurring mental health diagnoses, immigration issues, and even college/career counseling. I really enjoy working with all ages! I was a double major at University of Northern Colorado, studying both School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health. I completed all of the coursework for both tracks and the School Counseling internship, graduating in May 2017.

I started out working in college sports as a trainer and eventually began consulting with athletes and coaches after graduate school. My career path later took me through 10 years with an ambulance service, 2 years as a community service officer and 4 years as a crisis counselor embedded with a police department. I've also spent a considerable amount of time teaching psychology as a college professor. Because of this rather unique skill set, I have a heart for athletes, rescue workers and students.

Have you ever found yourself wondering, "Is this really the happiest I'm ever going to feel?" Maybe life looks good on paper, but something feels off, yet you can't quite name it. If that resonates, you're in the right place.
I'm Tobi Brenner, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC), and the founder of EmpowHer Counseling, a telehealth therapy practice built specifically for women navigating the full complexity of modern life. This is a space where you are seen, heard, and never judged.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent more than 20 years in corporate America across IT consulting, business operations, and human resources, where I became known as the "relationship girl." I understand the world career-driven women live in because I lived it. My own experiences with career dissatisfaction, grief, weight cycling, and the weight of everyone else's expectations are what brought me to this work — and what keep me deeply committed to it.
I hold a Master's degree from the University of Colorado Denver and bring a warm, direct, and highly personalized approach to every client. I am proudly affirming and welcoming of all identities and backgrounds.
Specialties include: Anxiety & Stress, Life Transitions, People-Pleasing & Perfectionism, Self-Esteem & Personal Growth, Body Image, Grief & Loss, Relationship Issues, Career Challenges, LGBTQ+ Counseling, Sex Therapy, Depression, Trauma, and Family Conflict.
I serve adult women across Colorado via telehealth and am currently accepting new clients.
